Happy Holidays!

This will be my last blog until next year! Today, we worked on a
reindeer project and continued with sounds. We also practiced the
"tricky" numbers (10, 11, 12) and had music practice at the high school.
Tomorrow, we will have reading in the morning, watch Polar Express, and
our party in the afternoon around 1:00. I hope to see everyone at the
concert tonight. Have a wonderful and safe holiday and I will blog again
in 2009!

We worked hard on sounding out small words today. You will see a
worksheet come home about this topic. Remember, the word does not need
to be spelled correctly at this point. I would rather have the kids know
how to sound spell the word. They will have many spelling tests over the
next six years to learn the proper spellings! We also made some holiday
decorations, reviewed shapes and numbers in math, and visited the
computer lab. Have a great day!

We worked hard at writing quick words and sounding out words today. Your
child may come home with incorrect spellings on certain words. This is
perfectly okay; they will not learn how to misspell the words.
Kindergarten children need to sound spell for a period of time and then
slowly learn more tricks of the English language. They will spell
correctly before you know it! We also visited the computer lab and
talked more about being thankful. Have a great day!

Have a great weekend!

Today, we worked on sounds and numbers. We will continue with our number
writing next week. The reader pals stopped by and wrote Turkey Stories
with the kids (they will be in their folders today). The kids are
getting really good at copying sentences. We will now start sounding
more words out and I will be spelling less for them. If you see words
spelled incorrectly (except for quick words) it is okay. I just call it
kindergarten spelling. Have a great weekend!

Today, we worked on some more scarecrow projects to decorate our school.
We also practiced sounds and numbers, read a dinosaur book about school,

Today, we worked on letter and sound 'Q' as well as numbers to 10. We
visited the computer lab and wrote in our journals. As of now, we are
copying sentences in our journals and not spelling our own words. For
instance, today I wrote "I have a ___" on the board and the kids copied
the sentence and filled in the blank with one of the following choices:
cat, dog, fish, toy. In the upcoming weeks, the kids will begin spelling
words on their own with a focus on sounds and not the proper spelling.
We will not visit the library tomorrow due to the book fair. We will
check out books on the 18th. Have a great day!

Friday, November 7, 2008

Fantastic Friday!

Big Day Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the big day! Today, we worked on sentence writing (the kids
copy my sentence) and sounds. We also practiced numbers to five.
Tomorrow, we will have a normal morning. Our party will start at 12:30.
Please give your child a quick reminder about their costumes; they are
to stay in their bags until it is time to change. Also, we are not to
share costume items because of the spread of lice. Thanks and have a
great evening!

The Days Fly By!

I cannot believe it is already Wednesday! Today, we visited the computer
lab and practiced letter 'Gg'. We also colored some color trains. This
afternoon, we practiced a lock-down drill. I do not make a dramatic deal
out of these drills because I do not want to scare the children. They
just know that we need to practice staying in our rooms and that we need
to be very quiet when Mr. Cawcutt checks on us. Tomorrow, we will
continue with our Fall unit and letter 'Hh'.

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

help them for just a few minutes this weekend. We will also practice it
at school. We will be starting an apple unit next week. Have a great
weekend!

Thursday, September 11, 2008

What a Quick Week

I can't believe it is already Thursday! The kids did a much better job
today of raising hands and waiting for a turn to talk. This is a slow
process in kindergarten so I was very impressed with their progress this
week. We worked on shapes and colors today. We also drew a picture about
why we are good friends. Tomorrow, we will meet our reader pals for the
first time. These are 6th grade students who come to the room and read
with us on Fridays. I am sure the kids will love this!

Today we worked on a lot of reading and math. We also made insects
(ladybugs) and wrote a journal about plants. We will be working on gifts
for our grown-ups next week. We will also continue with money. Have a
great weekend!

A little bit of stress!

Today was a little difficult for the children. With a lot of energy,
frustrations with the weather, and excitement for summer, the children
had a difficult time listening and following directions. We practiced
listening, lining up, walking, sitting in our chairs, and keeping hands
to ourselves. I can understand their frustrations! We just need to get
back on track.

Wonderful Wednesday

Today was a busy day. We are starting to prepare for the end of the year
by printing all of the things we have practiced over the last months. We
have learned a lot! This printing will go in their end of the year
memory book, which will come home with them on the last day of school.
We also checked out library books and went to the computer lab.

Hello!

We discussed insects a few times today. We talked about how spiders are
not insects because they have eight legs and two body parts, while
insects have six legs and three body parts. We also wrote in our
journals and practiced counting pennies. Tomorrow is library day!

Monday, April 28, 2008

Happy Monday

We did a lot of work today. We wrote a journal (remembering spaces and
lowercase letters). We also started our chapter on money and time in
math. During unit time, we discussed insects and made caterpillars. We
also talked about pollution and recycling.

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Rain Rain

Today we worked on reading and adding. We also wrote a journal about our
vegetables we are growing. Tomorrow is our fieldtrip to Esko school. We
will watch Jack Hartmann perform. Please read the notes in your child's
folder. There is a note about purchasing items tomorrow. Just send money
with your child. The posters are supposed to be pretty cool.

Another Good Day

We did a lot of work today. We read, added, and measured. We also went
to library and switched our table spots. Good work, kids!

Tuesday, April 22, 2008

A Good Day

The kids did a good job of working today and we got a lot done! We
practiced sounding out words, adding, and discussed Earth Day. The kids
created the planet by dropping globs of blue and green paint on paper
and then folding it together. They made some really cool designs.
Tomorrow, we will have library so please send your child's book back if
you haven't done so. Thanks!

No TV Week

Our school is starting a "NO TV WEEK" this week. Our class didn't
receive the notices until today due to kindergarten roundup. Because of
this late notice, I will not be making a big deal of this in my
classroom. If your child brings back the no TV slip (which includes
computer video games), I will let them choose a prize. However, I will
not be making a big deal of it so that some feel bad. This late notice
can be hard when children have TV or video games as a reward for good
behavior. On a different note, today we started preparing gifts for
Mothers and Fathers day. We also talked about plants and
addition/subtraction. Tomorrow, we will visit the computer lab.

Last day of the week

Today was our last day of kindergarten for the week. Tomorrow, I will
see the little ones at kindergarten roundup. Today, we worked on
subtracting; the book will come home with your child today. We also
started a plant journal. We will watch our garden grow over the next 5
weeks and document things in our journal. Talk at you next week!

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Whacky Wednesday

We worked hard today at reading and subtracting. We also went to library
and read a plant book called "Seeds Seeds". Reminder that Friday there
is no school for kindergarten. Talk at you tomorrow!

Monday, April 14, 2008

Back to School!

Well, after a long weekend which had a lot of excitement for the kids,
they did a very good job getting back into the swing of things. We
practiced subtracting today. We also planted vegetables, grass, and
kidney beans today. We will watch them grow over the next month and see
what happens. We will continue with the plant and Spring projects for
awhile. I sent home a newsletter today for both last week and this week.
Remember, no school Friday for kindergarten students.

Weather?

Well, what will our weather be like in the next 24 hours? Only time will
tell. Please watch the news to be sure we have school tomorrow. Today,
we read stories, subtracted in our math books, made math stories with
flowers (in their folders), and had fun with Mr. Bender. Tomorrow we
will possibly have the awards ceremony. If not, we will hold it next
Thursday at the same time. We will have our spelling testing tomorrow
(or Monday) for the words-what who small this-. Talk at you soon!

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

Sorry I am late to post today!

Today was a fun day. The kids worked hard in reading and math this
morning. This afternoon, we watched a Native American drum group
perform. The students from the group will be competing in New Mexico
soon. The kids were great listeners and some chose to dance during
some of the songs. Tomorrow there will be a sub in the morning but I
will be back by lunch.

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

What a Tuesday!

The kids did an excellent job of listening and working today! I was very
proud of there ability to be patient and raise hands at group times. We
talked about vowels, subtracting, and Spring. We also discussed the
seasons and how to identify the season by what type of weather there is.
In Minnesota, that can be difficult! Tomorrow is library day and we will
be attending a special presentation. More info to come tomorrow...

Monday, April 7, 2008

Happy Monday

It was a good day of learning today! The kids worked hard at sounding
out words in our take home book "Liz Wins" and started subtracting in
math. We also made some Spring frogs and went to the computer lab.
Tomorrow will be a normal Tuesday and it is actually a normal week with
little interruptions. Hopefully the weather will cooperate with us too!

Thursday, April 3, 2008

End of the Week

Today we did some work on sentence writing and pronouns. We do not
expect kids to completely grasp pronouns, however we do want them to
have a little introduction. We talked about saying 'he, she, it, and I'
rather than names of people or objects. We also finished our addition
book and heard a story from Mrs. R. Next week we will practice
subtraction, sounding out words, and complete more Spring projects. Have
a great weekend!

Wacky Wednesday!

We accomplished a lot today. We worked in our reading books, added in
our math books, worked through centers three times, and had library with
Mrs. Skelton in the classroom. There were some problems in the bathroom
today by an unknown person, so the bathroom door will be locked and
students will need to ask permission to use it. We did not have library
checkout today because of the book fair in the library. Tomorrow is the
last day of school for this week.

Friday, March 28, 2008

Have a nice weekend!

I was very proud to hear that the kids did a good job for the sub
yesterday. Today we completed several reading worksheets and math
pages. We also visited the book fair and made treasure maps with our
reader pals. Talk to you on Monday!

Tuesday Already!

Wow the weeks are going by so fast! Today the kids read a take-home book
called "Gus". This is my favorite book of the year! I was really
impressed with how well they sounded out words. We are starting addition
in math this week. Today, we put groups of two or three together. I
can't believe how well the kids are getting this concept. In unit today
we discussed maps. We colored Minnesota so they could start to recognize
the shape of our state. We also went to the computer lab today. Tomorrow
we will continue with reading three-letter words, addition, and also go
to the library.

Thursday, March 20, 2008

End of the Week

It is the end of the school week for the kids and we finished the week
with a busy day. We completed several activities about rabbits and eggs,
which were sent home with your child. We finished our quarter testing
and we are ready for quarter four (wow!). Next week, we will re-start
groups and centers. Our spelling words for next week are 'she, small,
too, this'. We will discuss maps; how to use and make them. Have a great
weekend!

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

Hoppy Tuesday!

Wow, the kids had energy today! We were able to use that energy and get
a lot done at school. We completed workbook pages (they did a good job
sounding out 'camel'), painted paper eggs, colored some bunny math
pages, went to the computer lab, and wrote numbers 0-100. Tomorrow is
the last day of school for the week and library day.

Monday, March 17, 2008

Happy St. Patrick's Day

We made our leprechaun hats today and wore them all day long. We
completed a few St. Patrick day activities as well as made our Easter
bunny bags. We took our spelling test today and I am very excited to
tell you that everyone got four out of four! The kids are doing a great
job with the words. We will not have a test this week. I forgot to send
home the homework on Wednesday, so I will just send one home this
Wednesday. Talk at you tomorrow!

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

Go Bombers!

What a fun day! The kids did a great job cheering the team on at the
pepfest. I hope some of you can make it to the game tomorrow. My
daughter and I will be there too. This morning, we worked in our
workbooks, practiced counting, and colored a leprechaun. Don't forget to
check the scores to see if we have school Friday. If not, talk to you on
Monday!

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

March if Flying By!

The weeks are flying by and it will soon be April! Today, the kids worked on a new book called "I am Lucky Because". This will come home to each family soon. We also finished our last day of centers until after Spring break. We have the pep fest tomorrow at the high school, so we will be out of the room from 1:00 until about 2:30. Go Bombers!

Monday, March 10, 2008

Gotta Love Mondays!

The kids did a great job today. We started testing for the third
quarter and they are doing wonderfully! I will email results to those
I have addresses for soon. We started some St. Patrick activities and,
ofcourse, practiced reading. Reminders were sent out today about us
not having school on Thursday. Watch the game or the news to see about
Friday.

Happy Friday!

The kids chose their schedule today, and they chose to not have centers.
So, we had our spelling test (which went great), talked about meat and
plant-eating dinosaurs, read stories, and talked about the word
"probably). This afternoon we worked with our reader pals on our "In
like a lion, out like a lamb" projects. Talk to you on Monday!

Thursday, March 6, 2008

What little smarties!

I cannot believe how well this class is writing! I seemed to be
impressed everyday with how well they are learning the rules of reading
and writing. As families, you are doing a wonderful job of preparing
your child for first grade. Today, we played a few word family games
(Cookie Jar and Ant Hill), where the kids needed to find all the _op,
_et, _in, words and place them in the appropriate spot. They did very
well with this. We also played a probability game with a paperclip.
Tomorrow, we will have reader pals and take our spelling test (like,
has, in, it).

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

Happy Wednesday!

We did a lot of writing today. We practiced sentences with spaces and
lowercase letters. We also graphed how many children have pets or no
pets. After library checkout, we watched a little of Charlotte's Web. We
will be reading the chapter book soon.

Tuesday, March 4, 2008

We got a lot done today. The kids have been really practicing their
journal writing. We are trying to remember upper and lowercase letters
in the correct spots, spaces between words, and an ending mark at the
end. I am very impressed with the kids' writing. We also had a visit
from Breanna's mom and baby brother. He is a cutie! Tomorrow is library
day and we will be practicing graphing in math.

Friday, February 29, 2008

We had a great presentation by a dental hygeniest today. She talked to the kids about brushing and eating good foods. We all get to have treats too, but we need to brush later so we have nice teeth! We also had reader pals today and we wrote tooth fairy stories. Next week we will discuss dinosaurs and space.

Thursday, February 28, 2008

The kids did a great job today. They are reading and writing so well for this point in the school year! We practiced graphing again today using our shirts. We also read a story called "Little Bill Visits the Dentist". Tomorrow we will have a visit from an area dental hygienist who will discuss dental health with the kiddos.

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

Today we worked on sounding out words. We also graphed what kinds of shoes we were wearing. There was library today and we read a book called "A Trip To The Dentist". Tomorrow we will have a weekly visit from our counselor to discuss being nice to others.

Monday, February 25, 2008

It was a good day. We worked hard a read a new take home book called "Sit Lil". Please have your child read it to you if there is time tonight. We finished a math book on measurement. We did not measure with rulers in this book, however we will do this later. We also went to computer lab today.

Thursday, February 21, 2008

We had a busy day. We took a few assessments (which are in your child's folder) about sounds and vocabulary words such as enormous, bloom, and chat. We were able to hear the author and illustrator of the book "Agate" talk about their book. We also won the manner banner this week which the children were really excited about. They had some really good manners this week. I will not be here tomorrow, so I sent home the homework and newsletter early. Talk to you on Monday!

Wednesday, February 20, 2008

Today we talked more about being President of our country. We practiced sounding out words in reading and also visited the library today. Tomorrow we will have a presentation by the author of the book "Agate".

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

The kids did a very good job today of following directions and finishing their work. We talked about Presidents Day, namely Presidents Washington and Lincoln. We also read a book called "Duck for President" and went to the computer lab. Tomorrow we will have library.

Thursday, February 14, 2008

What a great Valentines Party! The kids did a great job of holding it together all day. Thank you so much to everyone who helped out or donated for us. Everything went well! Tomorrow is reader pal day.

Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Today we practiced sounding out a lot of words. Some of the words in today's workbook lesson were: bat, cake, apron, and tag. We measured things around the room today with string and visited the library. Tomorrow will be Valentines Day. Our party starts at 12:30. Please be sure you have sent your child's Valentines for tomorrow!

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

It is the 100th day of school! We had awards day first, and then we completed a bunch of 100th day activities. We had 100 pieces of snack (cereal), colored a 100 worksheet, drew pictures of what we will look like when we are 100 years old, talked about what we would do with $100, and had playtime for 100 seconds. The kids weren't too fond of playtime for 100 seconds, so I gave them a little extra time. Tomorrow is library day!

Monday, February 11, 2008

Hello families! Today, we read a new take home book called "Sam Sat". I was really impressed with how many kids read through this book on the first try. They are really reading well! In math, we started a new unit on measurement. At first, we are just talking about longer vs shorter. Soon, we will start using rulers. We also decorated our Valentines bags for party day. If you haven't sent in your child's valentines, please do so in the next two days. Anyone helping out with the party, we will start at 12:30.

Friday, February 8, 2008

Happy Friday! We completed Valentines for our families today as well as for our reader pals. We took our math test and spelling test. I was so proud of all the kids during today's spelling test! They did an amazing job. I have never had a class with such high scores. Next week we will continue with Valentines Day Activities and also celebrate our 100th day of school on Tuesday. Have a great weekend!

Thursday, February 7, 2008

I was home with a sick child yesterday, so I apologize for not having a post! As for today, we got a lot done. We do four pages in our reading workbooks and six in our math workbooks! In reading, we sounded out words. In math, we discussed even and odd numbers. We also made Valentine cards for our reader pals today. We read Franklin's Valentines at story and watched Charlie Brown Valentine at rest.

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

Today we worked on sounding out words again. The kids a doing a great job of this! We counted to 100 in math and they wrote out the entire thing. Be sure to check their bags for this counting chart they worked so hard on. The kids also listened to a story called "Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink"! Library day is tomorrow.

Monday, February 4, 2008

What a busy day! In the morning, the kids not only worked on sounding out words, but they put together their valentine bees. You have to take a look at these because they are really cute! I will hang them in the hall until after Valentine's Day. There was a sub in the afternoon so that I could complete the reading and math testing for Winter. If I have your email, I will let you know the scores later this week. If I do not have your email and you would like to know your child's score, give me a call on Friday and I can let you know how they did. Happy Monday!

Friday, February 1, 2008

Happy Friday! The kids did a great job today. They were mostly respectful to each other and really worked hard. We completed worksheets about action words and practiced sounding out words in reading. We practiced counting in math and voted for Groundhog Day (will he see his shadow). We also had reader pals today. The playground was a bit slippery so there were a few kiddos who fell. We will have our first spelling test next Friday so please check the spelling words in your child's backpack. Have a great weekend!

Thursday, January 31, 2008

Wow, it is already Thursday; the days are flying by! Today, we sounded out words in our workbooks, counted to 100, made groundhog puppets, and stayed inside for recess. We had a nice long talk about staying above the line and showing respect to everyone in our class. February always gets a little tense for the children. I have noticed this since my first year teaching. The kids start to feel a little cooped up and need time outside! The good news is that Spring will come soon and we can all enjoy the nice weather! Tomorrow we have reader pals.

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

What a great day. The kids did a good job of staying calm and talking through problems. We practiced sounding out words in our workbooks, counted by 5s and 10s, and read a story about Groundhog Day. don't forget, we have library tomorrow!

Monday, January 28, 2008

Whew! What a day! The kids really worked hard on counting to 100 in math. We also read a new take home book called "We Have a Band". They only struggled with the word 'trombone' (and I think we can cut them some slack on that one)! We talked a lot about "Not sweating the small stuff" in our class. Our class really got frustrated with each other when someone didn't follow directions. I just try and remind them to not sweat and let me be the teacher. We went to computer lab today and had some yummy fruit snacks in the afternoon.

Friday, January 25, 2008

Today was a bit of a crazy day. We got a lot of things done, such as reading worksheets, counting to 100, penguin art, and snowman windsocks with our reader pals. The children, as a whole, seemed a bit tired and frustrated with each other. I explained that we all have tired or even cranky days, but we have to be sure that we are respectful at the same time. We all have those days, don't we?!

Thursday, January 24, 2008

As your children may or may not have mentioned, I was unable to attend school today. My son, Gus, needed to stay home because of the flu. I will be back on Friday. The plans I left for the sub were to sound out words in reading, count by 5s and 10s in math, make a penguin art project, and go to the computer lab. If there are no comments on your child's daily chart, I will update it tomorrow. Thanks!

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Thursday the 23rd

What a great day! The kids started learning about our new behavior plan called Above the Line, Below the Line. They did a fabulous job and we had a great day back after a long break. We sounded out words in reading, counted to 100 in math, and checked out library books. The book we read today was "A Penguin Pup for Pinkerton". A dog named Pinkerton tries to care for a football, which he thinks is a penguin egg. Ask your child who cares for the Emperor Penguin eggs, the mom or dad.
