Last Blog of 2010!

We have a busy day again:) The kids are playing Dr, Dr, in the gym as of
now. This morning, they were able to hear some 5th grade fairytales that
were written this year. We will also be journaling and going to the
computer lab. This afternoon, we will have music at the high school and
will finish our 3D shapes unit. Please be sure to bring your child to
their assigned room at the high school between 6:30 and 7:00 tonight for
our holiday concert. Signs will be posted informing you of where to
bring them. Tomorrow, we will be exchanging gifts, participating in a
drum presentation, watching the Polar Express, and wrapping things up
for 2010. Have a wonderful holiday season and I will post again in 2011!

What a busy Day...Again!

Our classroom schedule was quite different today, and the children have
done a great job of handling the change. We started the day by busing to
the high school for music practice. We also created some gingerbread
people this morning. This afternoon, we will be completing some math
work and making gifts. We will ride to the high school again tomorrow so
we are prepared for the concert tomorrow night. I look forward to seeing
everyone!

practiced sounding out words and trading the beginning sounds in words
to create a new word. After gym and music, we will be going to the
computer lab and completing centers. This afternoon, we will practice 3D
shapes and complete another holiday art project for the classroom. Have
a great day:)

program songs and the kids looked ADORABLE! After gym, we are going to
complete a journal and centers. This afternoon, we will complete some
shape activities (3D) in math and then create some more holiday art for
the classroom. Have a great day!

Monday, Monday...

Energy, energy, energy! Man, I wish I could have a little of the
children's energy on Monday mornings:) To help us reign in the
bounciness, we read a holiday story this morning. We then practiced
sounding out words and completed a journal entry about Santa. After gym
and music, the kids will be creating some holiday art and completing
centers. Our letters to Santa will also be mailed out today. This
afternoon, there will be a substitute teacher in the classroom. The kids

Back to school...

I was so happy to see the kiddos this morning. They were smiling and
ready to go. We discussed our long breaks and what everyone did for five
days. I introduced the new centers and we had the chance to play a
sounds game before gym and music. This afternoon, we will be journaling
(practicing spaces in between our words and lowercase letters) and
switching into our math groups. The kids will either be in my room or in
Mrs. Jordan's room. All children will have the chance to visit different
classrooms throughout the year because it is just more fun that way!
Have a great day:)

The kids came in very excited about the snow and well prepared for a
chilly recess. Thanks for sending in proper winter gear today. This
morning, we practiced our rhyming skills and discussed how rhyming words
often have the same ending letters in the words themselves. The kids are
currently in gym and music. This afternoon, we will be discussing how
our country was one hundred years ago and how technology has changed
many things. We will also practice counting on a number line. Have a
great day!

The kids did a good job for the sub yesterday, and a great job
controlling their excitement for the pepfest this afternoon, so...I am
very proud of them! We read our new take-home book this morning (This
Is) and they are now in gym and library. We will attend computer lab
this morning and complete centers. This afternoon, we will have our
normal routine, except that everything will be a bit shorter to be sure
we have time for the pepfest. We will all bus up there and cheer for the
BHS Football team. Students will be dismissed from the highschool. If
you pick your child up at the end of the day, please note that we will
be back a little later than normal. If your child is going to Bomber
Club/the Dance today, the bus will bring them back here. Have a great
weekend!

The kids were able to attend an awards ceremony this morning. Children
can earn Above the Line awards for acts of kindness or responsibility
that go above and beyond what they need to do at school. We were able to
see some of the children get awards in other grades, and now the
kindergarten children can also earn awards. We also practiced letters,
numbers, and completed centers. We visited the gym, music room, and
computer lab this morning. I have also attached a picture of the
children at the awards ceremony. Have a great day!

A Name has been Chosen!

Well, after a long list of ideas, the children chose two names for our
classroom frog. We combined them to create "Kindergarten Frog Cutie" as
our pet name. I can't help but call our frog KFrog, because it is just
too cool of a name to pass up!
We also practiced our letters today and visited the gym and music room.
This afternoon, we will be discussing the concept of weight (using a
balance and the terms heavier, lighter) and start a new chapter in math
on numbers. Have a great day!

Our Frog Picture

I am doing a test email to see if pictures will post of my blog though

The Last Week of School...

The children were very excited to start their last week today! We
completed some journaling, testing, and cleaning. We also visited the
gym and library. We will spend time tomorrow doing similar things. On
Wednesday, we will be completing our paper work, cleaning, and
organizing. The children will be attending "Movin' up day" in which they
get to visit with all the first grade teachers. We will also watch our
end of the year DVD and sign each other's Memory Books. I cannot believe
the end of the year is so close. Since this will be my final Blog for
the 2009-2010 school year, I would like to thank all of the families for
such strong support and for sharing your child with me this school year.
This was truly a great group to work with and I will miss them so much
over the summer. Thanks again, and I hope your summers are filled with
the occasional lazy day and lots of good times!

over the year. We will discuss our favorite units (fire safety, apples,
fall, the arctic, President's Day, Martin Luther King Jr, etc). A lot of
good times!

The countdown is on:)

The children have been counting down the days on our morning calendar.
As of this morning, we had twelve days of school left. Wow! The kids
journaled this morning and played a game of sand and sea adding. We also
completed centers and gave the room a little cleaning. This afternoon,
we will learn a little about farm animals and visit the library and gym.
The children will no longer be checking out library books. Have a great
day!

Half Day Today!

The children worked very hard and completed a lot of work in a short
period of time! Today, we completed a take home book (The Quilt) and
wrapped up our touch math unit. We will continue using Touch Math off
and on over the next two weeks. During reading, the children worked on
five different assessments that we actually completed whole group. We
also completed centers. The children completed a lot of work so after
reading a spider story this afternoon, I gave them a twenty minute
playtime before packing for home. It is amazing how quickly the end of
the year is approaching. There are only twelve days of kindergarten
left! What a bittersweet things to say as a teacher. Have a great
weekend:)

Roasty Toasty Day!

The children were very excited to come in their jammies today, but they
did a fabulous job of focusing at work times. We completed centers,
switched our table spots one last time, and toured the other classrooms
in the school while children were at the high school for track. We also
had an outside gym time. This afternoon, the kids will watch a movie
about farm animals to prepare for our animal unit next week and have
some time to use sidewalk chalk and bubbles. Have a great day!

It's Raining, It's Pouring...

The children enjoyed a wonderful presentation this morning from a world
champion jump roper. He taught the kids that if they want to be good at
something they will need to work hard and practice every day. They
really enjoyed the jump roping in the dark section of the program. The
kids worked with me for awhile today as well as a sub so that I could
work on testing. ALL the kids are doing a great job on their testing and
I have no concerns sending them to first grade. You will receive reports
at the end of the school year, however if you would like to know scores
earlier, just give me a call or send me an email. This afternoon, I will
continue testing. The children will visit the gym and library. Another
Leaps and Bounds class will be paying us a visit and we will also make
some butterflies. Have a great day!

:)

The kids had a great day of being the teacher. The Leaps and Bounds
classes came into the classroom to see what kindergarten is like and the
kindergarten students showed them the ropes. They were very mature and
excellent helpers! We were also able to practice sounding out words and
subtraction today. This afternoon, the kids will be visiting the gym,
music room, and the science fair (put on by grades 4-6). I will be
ordering field trip t-shirts today. Thanks to all who sent money in and
to all of those who are volunteering on the 28th. We will have nice,
small groups for the trip because of all the help. Have a great day!

The children worked hard at sounding out words today that all had
"tricks" within. Words such as bear and moose were quite confusing at
times! We practiced subtracting and journaling as well. This afternoon,
the children will visit the gym, music room, and computer lab. The
children will be bringing home their Zinnia plants today, so watch for a
red cup with a seedling! Have a good day:)

grown-ups who take care of them. Thanks for sending in tin cans, we were
able to get enough. Have a wonderful day!

Welcome back Monday

The children tried very hard to harness their energy this morning and we
were able to finish our reading and math for the morning. We practiced a
few of the reading tricks we learn in kindergarten (ee, ou, wh, and gh).
The new subtraction unit in math had us subtracting with pictures today.
We also discussed some pronouns (he, she, it, we, they) and completed
some new centers. Barnum's PTA generously supplied us with three new MP3
players so the children had a nicer way to listen to stories in the
reading center. A big thanks goes to our wonderful PTA! This afternoon,
the children will work in their memory books (you will receive these on
the last day of school), discuss how thankful we are for the grownups
who take care of us (Mother's Day), and visit the library and gym. Have
a wonderful day!

We had a full day of sounding out words and adding! The children
practiced using 'qu' rather than just a 'q' in letter time today. We
also journaled about how we could help our planet each day. This
afternoon, the children will be visiting the gym and music room. We will
have a tornado drill and finish our Earth day projects. Reminder: there
is only a half day of school tomorrow (12:25). Enjoy the sunny day!

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Brrrr;)

The children were very focused and ready to learn today, which is always
good to see! We started by reviewing the 'ing' sound. I worked with a
small group of children on reading sentences and answering comprehension
questions as well. The children practiced adding and completed centers.
There are some beautiful Spring journals hanging in the hall that the
children completed during reading today. This afternoon, the children
will visit the music room, have outside gym, and the computer lab. We
will also create some Earth day paintings. A quick reminder: There is
half day of school on Friday (12:25). Have a great day!

Happy Monday 8)

Today the kids did a great job of listening and focusing on their work.
I am very proud of how eager they are to learn! We worked on a new
take-home book titled "Fix It" and started a new chapter in math
(addition). The kids already have a great starting place. Many children
know some of their addition facts by heart. The children completed a new
set of centers today and discussed how much their plants have grown in
just ten days. The children will be having outside gym today and
visiting the library. Have a great afternoon!

End of the Kindergarten School Week

Hello! Today, the children took a spelling and math test. They did well
on both. This afternoon, the kids will be visiting the gym, music room,
and computer lab. We took some time to describe our plants (they are
sprouting and growing quickly) and close our plant unit. Next week, we
will be discussing Earth day. There will NOT be school for kindergarten
students tomorrow due to kindergarten roundup. Have a great weekend!

An Exciting Day

The children were delighted when the first egg hatched yesterday. Today,
they were exhilarated when all but one had hatched! They also walked in
to find that our vegetable garden had sprouted (spinach and peas). We
were able to sound out some words and discussed the trick 's' can play
in a word (sounds like a /z/). We also practiced graphing using tally
marks and completed centers. This afternoon, the kids will be visiting
the gym, music room, and computer lab. We will also plant some lima
beans without using soil. You will have to ask your child to explain
when they get home. Have a great day!

Monday, April 12, 2010

Hello families!

Today, the kids came in the room and seemed very tired from a weekend of
playing outside! They were still able to get a lot of work done,
however, and tried their hardest to focus. We sounded out words and
learned the word 'all'. They also completed a graph about Mickey Mouse
or Winnie the Pooh. We discussed the pronouns he, she, and it. This
afternoon, the children will work in their memory books, discuss seeds,
and visit the library and gym. Have a great day!

Friday, April 9, 2010

Hello Friday:)

Today, the children came into the room with a lot of energy. I was very
happy to see them control that energy and do a good job on their
spelling test. We did some graphing in math and completed another take
home book entitled "Ten Men". This afternoon, the children will visit
the gym and music rooms. Reader pals will be stopping by and we will
plant our vegetable garden. Have a fabulous weekend!

Thursday, April 8, 2010

A Busy Thursday!

We practiced sounding out words with the silent 'E' at the end. The kids
did a great job of learning this "trick". We also created a graph about
pets and boys vs girls. We switched our table spots this morning and
cleaned out our cubbies as well. This afternoon, the kids will visit the
gym and music room. We will discuss plants and the things they need to
survive. We will be having a lockdown practice this afternoon. The kids
understand that we will probably never have a real lockdown, but
practicing is a smart thing to do. They feel it is a chance to test
their listening skills and sit quietly so that our principal can't hear
them in the classroom. If you have any questions about our lockdown
practices, you can ask your child or give me a call at school. Have a
great day!

work. This afternoon, the children will make a plant diagram and label
all the parts of a plant. They will also visit the gym, music room, and
computer lab. Have a great day!

Terrific Tuesday

The children did a great job of jumping right back into our daily
schedule. We sounded out some words and practiced using "magic E" today.
We also started a brand new math unit about graphing. The children will
have the chance to make several different graphs this week. Today we
completed a graph about the color shirts we were wearing. This
afternoon, the kids will visit the gym, music room, and computer lab. We
will also begin a new unit on plants. We will discuss seeds, how plants
grow, what they look like, and how to care for them. We will be planting
our classroom garden on Friday. Have a great day!

them to show you their wheel when they get home. They did a great job of
reading the words. We also completed a little money review. Most of the
children retained the information about coins and their value. The kids
will visit the library and gym this afternoon. We made some fun Spring
art to keep in the classroom. In our centers this week, the kids will
have a chance to play a game from Professor Garfield
(professorgarfield.com). Check it out if you have a chance. Have a great
day!

Happy Friday!

The kids worked hard taking tests today! They did a great job on their
spelling test and their measurement math test. We also completed centers
and read our new take home book entitled "Gus". This is my favorite
take-home book (you will have to ask your child why). The kids spent the
day monitoring the bear and owl cameras online (sites are listed in
yesterday's post). Today, we also monitored the Africa cameras
(http://www.sportsmansparadiseonline.com/Live_Africa_Animal_Cam.html,
http://www.sportsmansparadiseonline.com/Live_Africa_Wildlife_Cam.html)
and had the chance to see two rhinos, an elephant, and several Gazelle.
We hope to see more in upcoming days. This afternoon, the children will
visit the gym and music room. They will also create a fun Spring
project. Have a wonderful weekend!

Let the Sun Shine!

The children are keeping a close eye on the eggs and incubator that were
brought in yesterday. Thanks to the room parent and student who brought
it in for us to watch! We will hopefully see some active baby chicks in
three weeks. Today, we sounded out words and reviewed measurement in
math. We also completed some reading assessments (which will come home
today) and all passed. I am very impressed with the children and their
progress in reading. Fabulous job! this afternoon, we will be visiting
the gym, music room, and computer lab. It is choice day in the lab so
kids will be selecting a website (such as Starfall or PBSKids) to use.
Have a great day!

What a Beautiful Day!

I was so happy to hear good comments about the student's day with the
sub on Friday! Today, the children worked on sounding out words and
began a new unit on measuring in math. We will visit the library and gym
this afternoon as well as complete a St. Patrick's Day project. I will
be sending home an order form for Championship Basketball shirts. They
will need to be returned tomorrow and I will pick the shirts up for the
kids on Wednesday and send them home. We will also be attending the
pepfest on Wednesday for our talented girls basketball team. There will
be no school for students on Thursday and possibly Friday, if the girls
win their first game. More information will be coming home. Have a great
day!

It's Raining It's Pouring!

The children had inside recess today. I was very impressed with how they
played quietly and stayed above the line during this time. Sometimes,
not getting outside for physical activity can really have a negative
impact on their behavior. This group does a pretty good job of handling
the situation! This morning, the kids worked on sounding out words and
telling time. They also completed centers. This afternoon, the kids will
visit the gym, music room, and computer lab. Have a wonderful day and
enjoy the rain!

Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head!

I am so proud of the children! The last few days have been quite "loud"
in our room and we have discussed how to improve this. The children came
in the classroom today and took charge of the situation:) I am very
happy with the children and their efforts to make our room a happy and
quiet place to be;)
This morning, we sounded out words and made some fun Spring clocks. We
also completed centers and gave the classroom a good cleaning. This

I am running late!

Sorry for the late post today! The children began the morning with a
special presentation about the Froggy books by Jonathon London. The
information was wonderful and most children did a fabulous job. Several
children needed reminders on how to listen to a presentation so we spent
some time practicing our listening skills. The afternoon was much
better:) We also practiced telling time and visited the library and the
gym. We have now started our St. Patrick's Day unit so you will see some
leprechaun projects making their way home. Have a great day!

Friday, March 5, 2010

Have a Great Weekend!

The children finished their unit on money this week. We began discussing
time and will continue this next week. The children read the book "The
Nap" today and will bring that home in their folder. We will also finish
our map unit this afternoon by creating maps of the children's bedrooms.
They will also create treasure maps. Please check your child's folders
for the newsletter and a paper discussing the upcoming spelling test.
Have a great weekend!

The children are doing such a great job in reading! Today, some children
worked on sounding out words while others read a story and answered
comprehension questions. Some of those materials are grade one so I was
really impressed with the hard work! In math, we discussed the calendar
and days of the week. The children will begin telling time this week as
well. For our unit discussion today, the children will practice looking
at a map of the USA and locating Minnesota. The children will also visit
the gym and music rooms this afternoon. I will be gone tomorrow. It is
wonderful that the children know how to "run" the classroom and will
stay on task while I am gone. It makes me feel a lot better about being
gone for a day. Have a wonderful afternoon!

Today, the children worked on sounding out words and identifying the
"normal nickel". We call it this because it is not big like a quarter or
small like a dime. We also completed centers and a journal. This
afternoon, the children will be going to music, gym, and computer lab.
We will also discuss President's Day a bit further. Enjoy the sunny
day!

Happy Valentine's Day...almost

The kids did a very good job of focusing thus far. It is hard on a fun
day to get all the work done before having a "party". The kids did a
great job! So far, we have completed our take-home book (Sam Sat),
colored heart puzzles in math, and sounded out some words. This
afternoon, we will have story, music and gym. We will then complete some
fun Valentine centers and exchange valentine cards. Have a fabulous
weekend!

I am Back:)

Today, the children took some reading assessments about vocabulary (they
will come home today, all did very well). They also practiced counting
by fives and completed centers. We visited tumblebooks.com to read some
fun stories before lunch. This afternoon, the children will either go to
music or outside gym (they are split for this) and we will hear some
information about the Olympics from the sixth grade. Have a great day!

Happy Friday:)

Today, the children practiced sounding out words and took their math
test (this will come home today in their folders-it's in the back of
their math book). We also visited the gym and music room. The reader
pals joined us to complete a Valentine number chart and we created some
fun Valentine decorations for the classroom. Have a great weekend!

I am Back!

It is so good to be back in the classroom. The kids did a very good job
for the teacher the last two days. Today, we worked on sounding out
words and counting. We also journaled, visited the music room and gym,
and played a game in the computer lab. We started our Valentine projects
today. Have a great day!

children are very well prepared and the sub should be Miss G (who the
children love). Talk to you again on Thursday:)

Today, we practiced sounding out words and counting by fives. The
children were able to list 41 words that started with the letter N! The
children will visit the music room, gym, and computer lab this
afternoon. Unfortunately, I will be gone tomorrow. Miss G. will be the
substitute teacher. The children are very familiar with her and enjoy it
when she comes in the classroom. I will send home all end of the week
papers today. Have a great weekend!

Brrrrr

Today the children worked on sounding out words (surpise, surprise:) and
counting by tens. They stayed in from recess because of the chilly
temperatures. This afternoon, the kids will be visiting the gym and
music room, discussing outer space (namely the sun and moon), and
visiting the computer lab. Have a great day!

The children did a fantastic job on their reading testing today! I will
send home a letter with your child's report card letting you know your
child's scores. Everyone was near or above the goal. I am very proud of
their hard work. The children worked on sounding out words today and
practiced numbers to 100. We will be counting by 5's and 10's in math
this week. They also visited the music room, gym, and computer lab
today. Have a great day:)

Hello!

Today the children worked on sounding out words and writing their
numbers to 100. We also completed centers and visited the gym and music
rooms. Remember, there is only a half day of school tomorrow. Have a
great day!

The children did an excellent job sounding out words today. All of the
kids can find at least two sounds for every word. I have never had a
class accomplish this so early in the school year. The children
completed math centers again today as well as visiting the gym and music
room. We will have a lockdown practice at 2:00 this afternoon to review
school safety procedures. The children understand that we practice these
drills to be prepared, however they will probably never have to do it
for real. Enjoy the heat wave!

The kids did a great job of listening after coming back from a three-day
weekend. We practiced sounding out words this morning. We also practiced
numbers in our math centers. Some children worked on adding at this time
while others practiced their number to 20 or 100. The children had
activities that were appropriate to their needs. We also discussed
Martin Luther King Jr this afternoon. The children learned that he was
an important man because he helped the world understand the importance
of all getting along. Have a wonderful day!

Have a Great Weekend!

Today we read our new take-home book "What Do We See". The kids are
doing a fabulous job of reading their quick words. We also finished our
math unit on numbers to 20 and read "Polar Bear, Polar Bear". In the
afternoon, we visited the gym and music rooms. We will be going to the
high school at 1:10 to watch a performance of Cinderella. The kids are
really looking forward to it. Have a great weekend!

We're Having a Heat Wave!

Today we practiced finding the ending sound in a word. The kids reach
out and "grab" the sound. Most children need to say the word out loud to
find it. We also practiced numbers and made penguin art. We visited the
gym, music room, and computer lab today. Enjoy the heat wave!

Today, the children started out with a sounds practice page. They are
doing a wonderful job finding the beginning sound in a word. We
practiced numbers and counting. I have started testing math skills for
this quarter. The kids are doing a great job. We would like all children
to recognize numbers to 20 by this point in the school year. We started
our Arctic unit today and discussed some of the animals that live in the
coldest places on Earth. Have a great day!

We're Having a Heat Wave...

Today the kids worked on sounding out words in their workbooks (such as
skate, mop, and mask). We created graphs in math (do you prefer white or
chocolate milk) and practiced writing numbers 9 thru 11. Some of the
children are turning their nine around, so we use the poem 'circle and a
line makes a nine'. We also visited the gym, music room, and the
computer lab. Have a great day!

Have a great weekend!

Today we read our new take-home book entitled "What do we do now?" It
will come home today. We also worked on numbers and completed our
centers. With our reader pals, we created snowman windsocks. We also
visited the music room and the gym. As a reward, your children had a
little movie time today. I was very impressed with their hard work this
week. Many children can have a hard time adjusting back into the routine
of school after a long break. This year, I didn't see that at all! Plus,
they even moved forward with their reading and math goals rather than
falling behind. Excellent work!

Today we practiced sounding out words and counting. The kids are doing a
great job of finding the beginning and ending sounds of words. We mainly
use our workbooks for these activities, so you will not see too many
papers of this sort coming home. We also visited the music room, gym,
and computer lab. Have a great day!
